In June, the International Institute of Municipal Clerks launched its new distance education program. IIMC is offering four courses, each worth points and recertification hours for IIMC members working to obtain or retain their Certified Municipal Clerk designations or to advance in the Master Municipal Clerk Academy.

The cost for these courses is $165 for an IIMC member and $231 for non members. These costs do not include textbooks.

The courses are:

Introduction to Law - This is an introductory course designed to acquaint the participant with an overview of law and law terminology. This is a self-paced course where the participant will read the material and participate in threaded discussions. Legal Terminology reference book required.

Managing and Leading Individuals - This course is for participants who want to learn how to manage and lead others for whose work they might be responsible. Topics will include the concepts of management, concepts of leadership, elements of supervision, and motivation techniques. This is a self-paced course where the participant will read the material, participate in threaded discussions and write a paper. No text required.

Managing and Leading Groups and Teams - This course is for participants who want to learn how to manage and lead temporary or permanent teams and groups. Topics will include the concepts of collective action, group development, social psychology of power, reciprocity and social exchange, and project management. This is a scheduled 12-week course where the participant will read the material and participate in threaded discussions. At the end of this course, participants will have their choice of writing a short essay or taking the final exam. No text required.

Managing Change and Conflict - This course explores the proactive management of mandatory and voluntary change and the management of personal and organizational conflict. Participants will learn helpful methods to manage the changes they have to implement. They will also learn several conflict management techniques that might not always resolve conflict but at least manage it ethically and professionally. This is a scheduled 12-week course where the participant will read the material, participate in threaded discussions and complete an individual project. No exams/quizzes. No text required.

Scheduled Course Assignments have deadlines and must be turned in by the deadline for credit. Course will end after the scheduled 12 weeks of assignments.

Self-paced means you work on the course at your leisure as time permits. The course will end four months from its start date.

Threaded Discussion - Logging on and writing a message relevant to course reading topics posted by the instructor and responding to the messages of virtual classmates.
